Recil Hammett Elledge, age 89, of Lexington, MS, passed away late on Thursday, October 24, 2024. Mr. Elledge was a resident of Yazoo City, MS, for over 60 years. Recil was born on Saturday, June 22, 1935, in Holmes County, MS, to Ruth Hammett Elledge and R.E. Elledge.

Recil was preceded in death by his parents, R.E. and Ruth Elledge, and brother-in-law, Kenneth Milstead.

Recil survives his loving wife of over 63 years, Betty Elledge; his children Alan Elledge of New Orleans, LA, and Pam McPhail (David) of Yazoo City, MS; his grandchildren John David McPhail (Rachel), Michael McPhail (Madeline), Liddie McPhail (T. Michael Dougherty), one great-granddaughter, Ellie and sister, Fern Milstead of Mandeville, LA.

Recil lived most of his life in a tri-county area, except his time in the United States Army and a brief period in Jackson, MS. He graduated from Belzoni High School in 1954 and spent several years at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. Recil entered the US Army in the late 1950s.

Recil was introduced to his future wife by Cousin Dodd on a city bus in Jackson, MS, in the final months of 1960. Three months after their introduction, Recil and Betty wed in January 1961. Within a few months, they moved to Yazoo City and remained there until 2023, when they moved to Lexington, MS.

Those who knew Recil will remember him for his love for the Lord and his love of gospel music. He has left an unfillable yet memorable void.

Visitation will occur on Monday, October 27, 2024, from 9:00 to 10:30 at Southern Funeral Home in Lexington, MS. Graveside services will immediately follow at 11:00 at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Lexington, MS.
