Ednita Ruth Gillespie Wixon

Ednita Ruth Gillespie Wixon, 84, of Greenwood, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Born Sept. 2, 1938, in Itta Bena to George Edward Gillespie and Bertha Corinne Clanton Gillespie, Ednita was a graduate of Greenwood High School, class of ’56, where she was a cheerleader. Following graduation, she worked at the Bank of Greenwood.

Ednita married Fon Tildon Wixon Jr., of Cruger, on Sunday, June 15, 1958 – a rainy Father’s Day – in the chapel of North Greenwood Baptist Church. They lived throughout the Delta in Greenville, Greenwood, Indianola, and Drew, settling in Cruger. Ednita worked for Staplcotn from 1974 to 2001.

Ednita was a charter member of North Greenwood Baptist Church. She faithfully attended Sunday services and was a member of Hope Sunday school class in addition to serving with the missions committee. Ednita sang in the choir, played handbells with the Delta Bells, and enjoyed LLL get-togethers on Tuesdays. She was a member of Town and Country Garden Club and a Cottonlandia volunteer. She was an avid bridge and bunco player. Ednita loved to travel with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Fon Tildon Wixon Jr.; and a grandson, Daniel Caleb Wixon.

Ednita is survived by two daughters, Toni Tubbs (Buford) of Greenwood and Rynn James (Captain David James, U.S.N.) of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, Fon Wixon III (Melanie) of Springhill, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Pearson, Chip Tubbs, Jordan Wixon, Ashley Wixon, Kayleigh Wixon, Caitlyn James and Carmen Coeler (Joel); two great-grandchildren, Sloane and Harley Tubbs; a brother, George Gillespie (Jayne Person) of Orange Beach; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who were loved dearly.

A celebration of life service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at North Greenwood Baptist Church with burial following at Oddfellows Cemetery in Lexington. Visitation was held prior to the service from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.

Pallbearers were Crawford Logan, Steve Flemming, Ronnie Moss, Jeffery Mooneyham, Jay Cutts, Howard Alderman, Chip Upchurch and Dennis Ratliff.

Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Spivey, Jack Sutphen, Larry Gnemi, Meredith Allen, Richard Avant, Gary McDonald and Jay Pilecki.

Memorials may be made to North Greenwood Baptist Church/missions and LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.
