Mrs. Alice C. McBee
Dies At Family Home
Mrs. Alice Cunliffe McBee, beloved resident of our city, and widow of the late John H. McBee, who for many years served Holmes county as Circuit Clerk until his death, died Wednesday afternoon at the family home. She had been in failing health for several months. Her children had been at her bedside the past week as her illness grew extremely critical. She was 78 years of age.
Mrs. McBee was a native of Holmes county born near Lexington. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cunliffe, who were early settlers and prominent in the early days of Holmes county. Her father served valiantly with the soldiers of the Lost Cause losing his life in the Battle of Gettysburg.
During her many years residence in Lexington where she was known and loved by everyone, her friendliness and kindness endeared her to all. She was a woman of brilliant intellect and her interests in all phases of the community were kept keenly alert. Her home was her shrine and her devotion to her family paramount. When bereft of her husband she carried on and directed the household with every detail, her children being instilled with the graciousness and kindness so prominent in the family lineage. She lived to see and enjoy the prominence gained for themselves through her motherly guidance and tutelage.
She took an active interest in her church and was one of the devout members of St. Mary’s Episcopal church.
Funeral services will be held at the family residence Friday morning at 10 o’clock conducted by Rev. Elnathan Tartt. Interment will be made in Odd Fellows Cemetery, C. S. Harrell in charge of funeral arrangements. She is survived by the following children: Dr. J. H. McBee, Will C. McBee, Dalton McBee, Dudley McBee, Greenwood; Mrs. Fred Z. Browne, Texarkana, Texas; Mrs. John Beale. Chicago; Mrs. John Carpenter, Durant, Okla.; Mrs. H. H. Johnson and Miss Dorothy McBee, Lexington.
