Obituary

Alice Dalton Thurmond

Mrs. Alice Dalton Johnson Thurmond, widow of W. E. Thurmond, Sr., died at Parkview Medical Center in Vicksburg on Sunday, March 11, 2001. She was 88 years old.

She graduated from Lexington High School, attended M.S.C.W. (Mississippi State College for Women) in Columbus, and graduated from the University of Mississippi in Oxford. She was a member of the Chi Omega fraternity.

Mrs. Thurmond taught school for several years. Then, she worked as a school attendance examiner for the Mississippi State Department of Audit. She retired in 1985.

She is survived by three children: Ed Thurmond of Lexington, Mrs. Mike (Mary) Chaney of Vicksburg, and Walton Thurmond of Ellisville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Dick Aiken of Jackson and Mrs. Robert Cockroft of Columbia, Maryland.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 14, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Lexington, with Reverend Horace Choate officiating. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington with Southern Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Serving as pallbearers were: Julian Watson, Billy Gene Carroll, Watt Ervin, Nick Nichols, Jimmy Bevill, and Tommy Gantt.
