Gordon Swinney Ashley, Jr.
Funeral services for Gordon Swinney Ashley, Jr., 68, of Lexington, a retired Federal bank examiner, were held Saturday, July 25 at 10 a.m. from Southern Funeral Home in Lexington. Rev. Hank Storey was the officiating minister assisted by Rev. Tom Hollowell. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Mr. Ashley died Thursday, July 23, 1992 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson of pulmonary disease.
A native of Lexington, Mr. Ashley was a graduate of Lexington High School and attended Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Virginia from 1941-1943. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 in the 29th Infantry Division and was in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day. After military duty, he graduated from the University of Mississippi. He served as a Federal Bank Examiner for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., Washington, D.C. for 30 years, retiring from the Baton Rouge, LA FDIC Field Office in 1979. Formerly, he was the examiner-in-charge of the Greenwood, Meridian, and Jackson, MS FDIC Field Offices.
Having an active interest in the hobby of genealogy and local Holmes County history, he contributed many articles and local history items to the Greenwood and Kosciusko, MS libraries.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Ashley Murtagh of Moorhead; a niece, Pamela Walker, a great nephew, J.T. Walker and a great-niece. Ashley Walker, all of Swiftown.
Pallbearers were John W. OKelIy, Charles Ellison, Mike Lammons, George Bobo, Jeffie Alford and Bill Murtagh.
Honorary pallbearers were Bill McLellan, Bank Sheppard, Fred Ray, Dr. John G. Downer, Cruill Chambless, Gene Heidelberg, and T.E. Murtagh. Memorials may be made to French Camp Academy.
