Notes

Paul Bingham Brumby, the son of Walter Elridge and Mattie Alexander Brumby, was born in Goodman, Mississippi.

After graduating from Holmes County Agricultural High School, he received his degree at the University of Texas Medical School and completed his residency at Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. He later did post-graduate work at New York Polyclinic and Harvard University.

In 1930 Dr. Brumby came to Lexington and entered private general practice. For many years he served as Chief of Staff of the Holmes County Community Hospital.

On June 25, 1935, he was married to Lynda Faye Patton of Oxford, Mississippi. They are the parents of two children, Paul Bingham Brumby, Jr., and Lynda Patton Brumby, now Mrs. James Donald Holder.

He served in the United States Army in the South Pacific from 1943-46. He was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal.

He is a member of the North Central Medical Society, having served as President six years. He served as state president of the State Medical association 1964-65. He is a member of the Mississippi Academy of General Practice, having served a vice president of that organization. He served on the Board of Trustees of the State Medical Association. He is presently serving on the Board of Trustees of the Holmes Junior College, the Mississippi Blood Bank, and the Mississippi Foundation for Medical Care.p

He is a Mason, a Shriner, a Rotarian and an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church.

In September 1, 1970, he was honored by his friends with a "Dr. Brumby Day’" in appreciation for his service of forty years to the citizens of Holmes County. A reception was held in his honor at the Lexington Country Club.

Dr. Paul B. Brumby Services Held Tuesday

Dr. Paul Bingham Brumby died Sunday, April 18 at the Holmes County Hospital in Lexington after a lengthy illness. Funeral services held 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Howard Allen officiating. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery.

A lifetime Holmes Countian, Dr. Brumby was born in Goodman in 1902. He attended the University of Texas where he received his M.D. in 1929, and interned Shreveport (La.) Charity Hospital. He received further training at New York City Polyclinic and Harvard University.

Dr. Brumby came to Lexington in 1930 and was a general practitioner and surgeon for over 50 years until his illness in 1981. His practice in Lexington was continuous except for the years spent in the military service during World War II serving as a medical officer. Dr. Brumby attained the rank of major and was awarded a Bronze Star for gallantry in action on Saipan the Pacific in 1945.

He was state president of Mississippi Medical Association from 1964-65, and was a board member of the MMA of Holmes Junior College and the Mississippi Academy of General Practitioners. He also served as president of the North Central Medical Association for six years. He was a longtime chief of staff of the County Community Hospital.

Dr. Brumby was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Rotary Club.

Dr. Paul B. Brumby Day was observed in Lexington on September 20, 1970 at which time he was honored by Citizens of Holmes County for 40 years of service. This special event was arranged by the Lexington Lions, Rotary and B&PW Clubs. During this time the Board of Trustees of the Holmes County Community Hospital honored Dr. Brumby for his years of service on the medical staff of the local hospital.

In 1977 Dr. Brumby was chosen as Holmes County's Best Citizen, an honor bestowed on him by his fellow citizens through nominations made in the Holmes County Herald.

A coronary care unit to honor Dr. Brumby was started at the Holmes County Community Hospital in Lexington in 1976 with a donation from the late LeRoy Paris of Lexington. The unit has become a vital part of the present day Holmes County Hospital. Perhaps Mr. Paris's remarks at the time best sum up the life of Dr. Paul B. Brumby. Mr. Paris made the following statement on the occasion of the donation to the hospital. "It is fitting that this type memorial be established honoring Dr. Paul B. Brumby. No other individual in the area has given more of himself in time, talent and service than Dr. Brumby."

He is survived by his wife, Lynda Patton Brumby; one son, Paul B. Brumby, Jr. of New York, New York; one daughter, Mrs. Donald Holder of Mobile, Alabama; one sister, Miss. Carol Brumby of Goodman.

Pallbearers were Henry Paris, Frank A. Jones, Pat Barrett, Jr., A. B. Holder, Robert Berman, Tommy Holder, Harold Hammett, Jr., Julian Watson, Jack Yates and Norman Weathersby, Jr.
