Obituary
Dudley Sale Burwell

Dudley Sale Burwell, Sr. of Jackson, 73, died Monday, September 26, 2005 at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson from complications from cancer. Services were 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Beth Israel Congregation, with 3:30 p.m. graveside services in Lexington.

Mr. Burwell was born in Ebenezer on November 21, 1931. He graduated from Lexington High School and attended Holmes Junior College and Draughons Business College. Mr. Burwell served 2 years in the United States Marine Corps and attained the rank of Corporal. After his military service, Mr. Burwell went to work at Lewis Grocer Company in Indianola in the accounting department. While working at Lewis Grocer Company he obtained his Certified Public Accounting certificate. Mr. Burwell worked at Lewis Grocer Company for 33 years and after 2 heart surgeries retired in 1987 as the company's president and CEO. In 1988, Mr. Burwell and his wife, Joan Berman Burwell, moved to Jackson. He later obtained a stock brokers license and real estate brokers license. Mr. Burwell was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He was a member of and was very active in the Beth Israel Congregation. Mr. Burwell was involved in numerous civic organizations. He was past president of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce, the Indianola Rotary Club and the Industry Political Education Committee of Mississippi. He was on the Board of Directors of the Retail Association of Mississippi, The Ak. Retail Grocers Association and Council for the Support of Higher Education in Mississippi. He was also on the Advisory Board for the University of Mississippi Business School.

Mr. Burwell is survived by: his wife, Joan; his children, Lana Burwell, Dr. Dudley Burwell, Jr. and wife Niki, Dr. Joel Burwell and wife Lisa, Todd Burwell and wife Dana, and Troy Burwell and wife Cathy; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was also survived by his mother, Winfree Burwell who is 98; his sister, Esther Thompson and husband Baxter; his brother, Clem Burwell and wife Peggy; his brother-in-law, Bob Berman and wife Sondy; his sister-in-law, Brenda Guercio and husband Jake; and nine nieces and nephews.
