Jean Strider McLellan Carson, 87, died on July 16 at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, MS, after a brief illness. The only child of the late Walter and Janie Cox Strider, Jean was born in Grenada, MS, but moved to Lexington, MS, with her parents when she was 12 and thereafter made Lexington and Holmes County her home. She graduated as Valedictorian from Lexington High School and from Belhaven College where she was also Valedictorian. In 1949, a month after her graduation, she married her first husband Bob McLellan.
In addition to raising three daughters, Jean had an outstanding career as director of the Holmes County Department of Public Welfare. She became a leader throughout central Mississippi in supporting programs for mental health and earned the respect of all who knew her for her work ethic, her cheerfulness, her intelligence, her wisdom, and her unflagging enthusiasm for public service. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington, and following her retirement after 33 years at the Welfare Department, she continued to be an asset to her community at the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years Bob McLellan. She is survived by her second husband Charles Carson and her daughters: Lanelle Fincher (Murray) of Madison; Robin McCrory (Frankie) of Lexington, and Lydia McLellan of Lexington. Her grandchildren are Allison Townsend (Jason) of Starkville, Strider McCrory (Jane Allen) of Indianola, Lily Fran McCrory of Lexington, Laura Fincher of Madison, and William Fincher (Carolyn Grace) of Madison. She is survived by 5 great grandchildren and her step children and their families: Chuck Carson (Pam) of Houston, MS, Jayme Autry (Robert) of Kosciusko, Julia Soniat (Billy) of New Orleans, Chris Carson (Pam) of Madison, Craig Carson of Tupelo, and Janis Lambert (Tom) of New Orleans.

Research Notes
This is a case where a mother remarried (Carson) after the death of her first husband (McLellan), but a tombstone with her name was placed with him. Thus, at her death the family buried her with the first husband. Therefore, this record list her last name as McLellan and a Prior Married Name as Carson, but in reality, the reverse is true.
