Notes

As reported by Allie S. Povall, Jr. "Cass served in Longstreet's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia until he was wounded in the foot in one of the Overland Campaigns -- the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse and Cold Harbor - battles of 1864. He was furloughed and returned to Holmes County. When my father Allie Povall and his first cousin, Bubber Ginn, were growing up, and someone was being difficult, an elder would say, "he/she can't help it. It's just the Oltenburg in him/her."

Obituary

Cass Oltenburg
Commander and Comrades: Cass Oltenburg was born December 12, 1833 [1] and died January 4, 1908. How much of life and happiness and disappointment is compassed in this statement. Comrade Oltenburg came to Holmes county in 1855; at the beginning of the war between the states, he volunteered in the service of Mississippi and later in the Confederate States service, and served as lieutenant in the 18th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He was one of the charter members of Holmes County Camp No. 398 U. C. V., and was elected 1st Lieutenant, which position he held at the time of his death. A good citizen, a true comrade, a kind husband and loving and indulgent father has gone to greet the Great Commander above. May he rest in peace.

F. A. HOWELL, for Committee
