Obituary
Charles Ray Cox

Charles Ray “Butch” Cox was born on September 28th, 1951 in Las Cruces, NM, to the late James Wesley and Evelyn Gertrude Cox. He moved with his family to Pickens, MS in 1952. His love of the cowboy and ranch life was in his blood at a young age as he began training ponies to do tricks. He would carry this love forward as he taught many people how to rope and ride. Unbeknownst to him, he was teaching those he met how to be better people as much as anything else. Through his stints as president of the Mississippi Junior High School Rodeo Association and on the board of the High School Rodeo Association; as well as being a loving father, he was a hero to many young lives. He lived his life with compassion, simplicity, and dry wit.

Sadly, Butch hung up his spurs and rope on March 3rd, 2012 at rest in his home with his loving wife Fran. In addition to Fran, he is survived by his son Cody Cox and wife Caitlin of Jackson and daughter Lane Vargas, husband Frankie, and granddaughter Mia Vargas of Madison. Also, he is survived by his siblings James “Jimmy” Cox of New Hebron, Gene Ann Grantham of Lexington, Helen Cox Robertson of Gilbert, AZ, Susan Cox Davis and husband Bill of Brandon.

In addition to flowers, donations can be made in honor of Butch Cox to Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital or First Baptist Church of Lexington.
