Wilburn Rites Held Sunday
Mrs. Dorothy McBee Wilburn, a former Holmes County Superintendent of Education and longtime resident of Lexington, died Friday, March 4 at Manhatten Health Care Center in Jackson following an extended illness. She was 81.
Mrs. Wilburn, a native of Holmes County, was born January 1[9], 1902. She was a daughter of the late Mr. John Harbour McBee and Mrs. Alice Cunliffe McBee.
She was a retired teacher, served as Holmes County Superintendent of Education for 16 years, a life long member of St. Marys Episcopal Church, member of the Daughters of American Revolution, and a member of Colonial Dames. She was the widow of James F. Wilburn.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Marys Episcopal Church with Father Len Williams officiating.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. John M. Beal of StarkviIle: three nephews, R.C. McBee of Greenwood, Dr. John M. Beal of Chicago, Illinois, Lt. Gen. John W. Carpenter, III of Montgomery, Alabama; seven nieces, Mrs. Hermine McBee Copeland of Greenwood, Mrs. William H. Mounger, Mrs. Alice May Landrum and Mrs. Richard Aiken, all of Jackson: Mrs. R. S. Cockroft of McKenzie, Tennessee, Mrs. Alice Browne White of Tyler, Texas and Mrs. W.E. Thurmond, Sr. of Lexington.
Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery with Southern Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Tommy Gantt, Mike Stark, Mike Lammons and David Dillon.
Family requests that memorials be made to St. Marys Episcopal Church or to the Cancer Society.
