As reported by his son, Ed Wilburn Hooker, Jr., Wilburn was in submarines and trained in New London, Connecticut. He sailed out of San Francisco to Australia, and then to Subic Bay on the west coast of Luzon, Philippines until the war ended September 2, 1945. Like so many returning soldiers, he did not want to speak of his time in the war.
