Dr. Stephen Archer Eggleston, 77, well known retired physician of Tchula, died at his home on Monday, September 8 of a heart attack. He had been in failing health for about eighteen months. He would have been 78 years old had he lived until December 21st.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Lexington with Rector Robert G. Donaldson, pastor, officiating. Burial, was in Odd Fellows cemetery with Southern in charge of arrangements.
A native of Holmes county, Dr. Eggleston was born in the Acona neighborhood and spent most of his life in his native county. He was married on June 12, 1907 in St Louis, Missouri.
Dr. Eggleston first practiced medicine in Carrollton and at Shell Mound in Leflore county. Then he moved to Lexington where he practiced two years before going to Acona for a short while. In 1918 he moved to Tchula and there spent the remainder his active days in the practice of medicine with the exception of a period during the depression when, because of ill health, he went to Texas to make his home with his son and family.
Dr. Eggleston was a generous contributor to The Advertiser serving as its Tchula correspondent for many years and in 1926 served one year as its editor under the late R. A. Povall.
He was a lifelong and devout member of the Episcopal Church, a Mason and a member of the Fifty Year Club of the Mississippi Medical Society.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs Nell Bryan Eggleston; one son, William J. Eggleston of Mayfair Plantation, one daughter, Mrs. Sara Eggleston Baine of Tchula; and two sisters, Mrs Fannie Eggleston Lumpkin of Lexington and Mrs. Neadie Eggleston Money of Dilwyn, Virginia.
Also surviving are the following grandchildren: Mrs. Frank Rigby of Ralls, Texas, Harvey Baine, III, a student at the University of Houston, Nell Parker and Patricia Baine of Tchula. Bill Eggleston, Jr., Stephanie and Cathy Eggleston, all of Drew; and one great grandson, Frank Hugh Rigby of Ralls. Texas.
Pallbearers were Gordon Lyon, Pat M. Barrett, Eugene Sheppard, Jack Barwick, R. L. Ray, J. L. Shields, Guy P. Sharpe, and T. C. Cobb.
