Eva Minor Waldo Blake

Funeral mass will be held Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Lexington for Eva Minor Waldo Blake, 95, who died in Silver Springs, Maryland on Dec. 12. Interment will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Mrs. Blake was born Dec. 13, 1893 in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Eva Minor and Harry Joseph Waldo. The Waldo family moved to New Orleans shortly thereafter and she attended parish schools and graduated from New Orleans Normal College. She was a school teacher in the bayou country before marrying Melville Edgar Blake, deceased, and moving to Mileston Plantation near Tchula in 1916.

Mrs. Blake was postmistress for Mileston and Mr. Blake was plantation manager and Justice of the Peace. In 1930 the Blake family moved to Lexington. In addition to her role as housewife and mother, Mrs. Blake was one of the founders of the Lexington Library and was in charge of the distribution of surplus food stuff to needy families. During World War II she was price control-administrator for Holmes County. After her husband’s death in 1956 she ran his bookkeeping and tax consultancy for several years before retiring and moving to Decatur, Georgia where she lived with her daughter, Eve.

Mrs. Blake is survived by her daughter, Eve of Decatur, Georgia: and two sons, Melville E. Jr. of Bethesda, Maryland and M. Waldo of Silver Springs, Maryland; 9 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
