Obituary Mrs. Fannie L. Walton Mrs. Walton was the oldest resident of our town and perhaps of the entire county. She was born in Wilkes county, Georgia, 1809, and died November 8, 6. p. m. in Lexington at the home of Mrs. Sue Cunliffe, where she was removed upon the burning of the home of Mrs. Lina Martin, the daughter with whom she lived.
The end of her prolonged life came as peacefully and calmly as the close of the bright November day upon which she went to sleep in death. From the presence and tender care of devoted loved ones, she has entered into the presence of her Lord where there is no more pain, nor sorrow, nor death.
The funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church by her pastor, Rev. O. T. Kincanon, in the presence of a large congregation which evidenced the high esteem in which she was held by the community. It is by no means a little thing to live such a life as to make easy and possible such a gathering of friends and loved ones at the close.
In 1824 she came by private conveyance with her husband and servants from Georgia to Lexington, eleven years later she was left a widow with nine children, seven daughters and two sonshaving lost four children prior to this date.
How bravely she battled, how victoriously she wrought is attested by the applied type of manhood and womanhood she sent forth to lifes work. Her eldest son James Benton, served in the Civil War and was killed in a battle, at Franklin, Tenn., having received twenty-three wounds. Her second son, Dr. Thomas Walton, served as surgeon of a Georgia regiment during the Confederate war. All nine of the children whom who reared have themselves reared families, but she has outlived seven of the nine, her two daughters, Mrs. Sue Cunliffe and Mrs. Lina Martin, surviving her. Besides these she leaves about 118 living descendants, including 88 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, having lived to see the fifth generation, the oldest being a great-great-granddaughter about 10 years old, living in Washington, D. C. Somehow an especial interest attaches to one who has been able to carry on the battle of life so long and who has sent forth so many helpful influences into the world. And this interest is intensified when we know that in the life was a deep religions principle that shaped ideals, that strengthened character, that inspired with courage and hope, that rested upon God as Father and Jesus as Saviour.
For more than 50 years she was a member of the Baptist church, but during recent years has been deprived through infirmity of attending religious services. To the last her mind as alert and oh, how intelligently and interestedly she could converse about the things of long ago; and then how interested she was in all the current events. She loved to live in close touch with her times. To very few is given her privilege of passing through a life period covering so many changes and developments along various lines industrial, political, educational and religious. If we should seek after the natural causes of her long life we should emphasize her fine sense and good judgment, insuring the proper regard for the laws of health; we should emphasize her simple faith in God that is so effectual in dissipating the worries of life and so helpful in bearing its burden.
Another thing we would stress is the tender care, the watchful and affection-[rest missing].
