Herman F. Flowers, One Of Lexington's Leading Citizens, Buried Sunday, Mar 3

Herman F. Flowers, 86, of Lexington died Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m. at Temple Beth El in Lexington with burial in Temple Beth El Cemetery. Macy Hart conducted the services.

Mr. Flowers, born in Lexington, was a graduate of Lexington High School and Tulane University with a degree in business. While at Tulane, he served as president of the Student Body and as president of his class.

He was owner and manager of Flowers Bros. Department Store until his retirement in 1988.

A life-long resident of Lexington, Mr. Flowers was devoted to the preservation and betterment of his community. He served as Past President of the Rotary Club, Holmes County School Board, and Lexington Chamber of Commerce. He was also a director of Holmes County Bank and Trust Company.

Mr. Flowers worked for decades with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, where his work was instrumental in getting Lexington listed on the National Historic Register.

Most recently, he served on the board of Main Street Lexington Association.

Herman Flowers was a rare individual who was never heard to speak ill of any person, and who freely gave of his resources to improve the lives of others, most often without public awareness or acclaim.

He was preceded in death in 1992 by his wife of 54 years, Elvera Lamensdorf Flowers.

He is survived by: two daughters, Beth Lebow of Baltimore, Maryland, and Anne Gold of Savannah, Georgia; sister, Phyllis Insler of Hamden, Connecticut; seven grandchildren; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were: Phil Cohen, Pat Barrett, Jr., Don Barrett, Al Povall, Mike O'Brien, and Holt Smith.

Honorary pallbearers were: Woodson Earle, Fred Powers, Stanley Kline, Ben Lamensdorf, and Hugh Lamensdorf.
