Dr. Russell was born Dec. 3, 1907 in Daniel, Miss. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Freddie F. Russell. He attended schools at Rock Bluff and Polkville, Miss., and Pelahatchie, Miss., where he graduated from high school. After attending Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss, for one year in preparation for Dental School, he attended and graduated from Atlanta Southern Dental School (now Emory University Dental School) in 1932.
He practiced dentistry in Jackson, Mississippi until called into military service in spring of 1941, and came to Lexington upon termination of military duty in 1945.
Dr. Russell was married twice. First on July 15, 1933 to Roberta Brown, who died Feb. 8, 1942. Their only child, Roberta, was born June 10, 1938 and died August 8, 1959 from injuries received in an automobile accident. His second marriage was on April 8, 1943, while in military Service in Little Rock, to Martha Randall. Born of this union were two children, Gordon Dale Russell, Jr., on October 10, 1944, and Martha Randall Russell, on April 15, 1947. Martha married a Holmes County boy, James E. Cunningham, Jr., on August 24, 1968. Dr. and Mrs. Russell were blessed with three grandchildren.
Reared a Methodist, Dr. Russell joined the Presbyterian Church in Lexington in 1945. He Served as deacon, elder, and member of the session. He is a former President of the Rotary club.
He is a member of the Fourth District Dental Society, Mississippi Dental Society, American Dental Society, and is a life member of all three, achieved by forty years of continuous and devoted Service.
According to Dr. Russell's grandaughter, Quinn McClellan, Dr. Russell also served in the U. S. Army Reserves with the rank of First Lieutenant, Dental Corps and then the U. S. Army as Captain.
Funeral services for Dr. Gordon Dale Russell, 80, of Lexington were held Thursday, August 4 at 10:00 a.m. at Southern Funeral Home in Lexington. Rev. Howard officiated with interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington,
Dr. Russell, a native of Smith County and a long-time resident of Lexington, died at Methodist Hospital of Middle Mississippi on Tuesday, August 2.
He retired in December 1985 after 55 years in dentistry. Dr. Russell was a graduate of Atlanta Southern Dental College, now known as Emory University and attended Millsaps College in Jackson.
Dr. Russell was a World War II veteran, a member of the Lexington Rotary Club, a deacon and elder of the Presbyterian Church in Lexington.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Randal Russell of Lexington; one son, Dale Russell of Clinton, N.C.; one daughter, Mrs. Randy Cunningham of Tchula; one brother, F. Joe Russell of Jackson; and 4 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were David Dillon, Smith, Harold Hammett. Jr., Weathersby, John Weathersby and Billy Russell.
Honorary pallbearers were men of the First Presbyterian Church.
