Gwendolyn Meek Hammett, 91, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at St. Dominic's Hospital, in Jackson, MS. Visitation was from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington. Funeral services were at 3:00, with burial at Odd Fellows Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Pinkney Hammett, Sr.; six siblings: Lucille Meek Long, Nola Vee Meek, Maurice Meek, Corinne Meek, Edwena Meek Mallory, and Clifton Meek.

Gwendolyn was born in Goodman, MS on July 20, 1916, to William Edward Meek of Goodman, MS and Ella Elizabeth Hutchison Meek of Newport, MS. Gwendolyn's childhood was spent in Goodman, MS. She attended Holmes County Agriculture Junior College (the present Holmes Community College). It was on a train to Memphis that she met the love of her life, Harold Hammett. They were married on November 5, 1940. Gwendolyn and Harold resided in Lexington, MS where they raised their family.

Gwendolyn was a wonderful wife, mother, and friend. Her family and church came first. She was actively involved in her choir and UMW at the First United Methodist Church. Her main work and pleasure was always her home and she will always be remembered for her unselfish, committed love for her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She was completely dedicated to all of them without reservation and worked tirelessly for their welfare, comfort, and success.

Gwendolyn resided at St. Catherine's Village the past year. The Hammett family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff, for their dedicated love and concern for their mother.

Survivors include her six children: Harold P. Hammett, Jr. and his wife, Jackie, of Lexington; Gwenda Kellum and her husband, Boyd, of Jackson; Sandra Brett and her husband, Danny, of Lexington; Laura Atkinson and her husband, Dick, of Lexington; Fran Sowisdral and her husband, Jack, of Wake Forest, NC; and Sara Lynn Bloodworth and her husband, Mark, of Wake Forest, NC; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to The Hammett Youth Fund at the First United Methodist Church, 108 Tchula St., Lexington, MS 39095.
