The OFFICIAL BOARD of the First Methodist Church of Lexington, Mississippi, deeming it appropriate that formal notice of the passing from this earthly scene of William Pinkney Hammett, long time member of this Board and for many years its presiding officer, charged the undersigned, as a Committee with that duty, in the discharge of which, we respectfully present the following resolutions:
RESOLVED, that, by the death of brother William Pinkney Hammett, this Board and the Church it represents, have been deprived of the services of one of the ablest and most faithful members ever to serve this Board; the earnestness, the fidelity, and untiring patience which he always exhibited in considering the many recurring and oft-times vexing problems of this Board and our Church, did much to inspire his co-workers to extra effort to effectively carry on the labors of this Board;
RESOLVED, that, we recognize that his faith in his Church and its cause was so great, and his own character was so strong, that he never wavered in his work, although, at times, he seemed to be all alone; as witness events before he moved his membership to Lexington, when out at Owens Wells, where he was planter, merchant and long time operator of the famous Owens Wells Hotel with its mineral wells resort, he, almost alone, maintained a church building, with church services, and a Sunday School to the great good of that community; that this same spirit of service to his Church followed him into this Church at Lexington, as witness his service on the Building Committee that erected the useful and valuable Educational Building in 1930, when the "great depression" was on us, and later his services were great in the erecting of the splendid brick parsonage as a home for our local pastors in charge; and to his further great credit, he was faithful and regular in attendance at all church services, and saw to it that his large family of children regularly attended Sunday School in their formative years.
RESOLVED, that, tho, we recognize that brother, W. P. Hammett, as he was generally called, served his fellow citizens in many civil positions of honor and trust, on their choice and election, such as member of the Board of Supervisors of Holmes County, terms in the Mississippi State Legislature, and many other positions of importance, yet, it is his great contribution in loyal service to the Methodist Church that we acknowledge with grateful hearts and pay him this well earned tribute.
He has run the race. He has finished the course, and we are certain he has entered into the joys of his Father's house of many mansions.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that these Resolutions be received and approved, and that they be entered and spread at large on the Minutes of this Board; that a copy be sent to the members of his family, and that copies be delivered to the press.
