Funeral services for W. P. Hammett, Jr., 64, of Lexington were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 24 from St. Thomas Catholic Church in Lexington. Father Daniel Nowak officiated with burial In Odd Fellows Cemetery. A Rosary was held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 23.
He was a native of Holmes County and had retired after 30 years of Service as a Mississippi Motor Vehicle Comptroller. He was a World War II veteran and member of St. Thomas Catholic Church.
Mr. Hammett died Saturday, June 22 at Care Inn Nursing Home, Yazoo City after a lengthy illness.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Elsie Boyd Hammett of Lexington; one daughter, Mrs. Linda Hammett Hegwood of Jackson; one brother, Curtis Hammett of Memphis, Tennessee; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Ferguson of Ft. Worth, Texas and Mrs. Virginia Ewing of Dallas, Texas; and one granddaughter.
Pallbearers were Boyd Thompson, Harold Hammett, Jr., Baxter Thompson, Homer Daniel, Ray Johnson and Doty Porter.
Honorary pallbearers were Sam Sample, Wilburn Hooker, Frank Hughes, Bud Hammett, M.K. Ginn, Dr. A.M. Phillips and Tony Mansoor.
The family requested that in lieu flowers memorials be made to St. Thomas Catholic Church in Lexington, or a favorite charity.
