Obituary 

Mrs. Eloise Herbert

Mrs. Eloise Watson Herbert, widow of John Garrott Herbert, Sr., died Wednesday, March 1 at the Madison County Convalescence Home in Canton. Mrs. Herbert was in her ninetieth year, having been born in Lexington on August 14, 1888.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 4 at Southern Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Leslie Nabors and the Rev. Howard Allen officiated at the service. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Mrs. Herbert was a lifelong resident of Lexington, and belonged to the fourth generation of her family to be active in civic and cultural affairs of the town. In years past she was a leader in numerous organizations that at that time were important in the cultural life of Lexington, beginning with the choral club in the first decade of the century. Later she was involved in the study club and subsequently in the garden club. In the 1940’s she was instrumental in bringing good music to the town through a series of concerts by nationally known musicians through two seasons. At one time she also directed the choir of the First United Methodist Church. She was educated by private tutors in New Orleans and at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., and at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass.

Mrs. Herbert is survived by two sons, Raford Watson Herbert of Jupiter, Fla., and Francis Lansdale Herbert of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her oldest son, John Garrott Herbert, Jr., predeceased her. She is also survived by ten grandchildren. three great-grandchildren, one brother, Henri P. Watson, Sr., of Lexington and one sister, Mrs. Mattie Mae Gwin of Oak Park, Ill.

Pallbearers were John Steward Watson, Morris Williams, Louie Beau Nichols, Lansdale Herbert, Jimmy Herbert, Daniel Herbert, Billy Herbert, and Jimmy Watson.
