Obituary

Francis Herbert

FRANCIS LANSDALE HERBERT passed away on October 20, 2004 surrounded by his family. He was born June 19, 1921 in Lexington, Mississippi to Elouise Watson and John Garrott Herbert, the youngest of their three sons. Earning a bachelor of science, he graduated from Mississippi State University in 1943 where he was an active member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He then joined the United States Infantry as a second lieutenant. He served with the 120th Infantry in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany and was awarded two silver stars for gallantry in action and two purple hearts for wounds sustained during the war. He was hospitalized in England and the United States and was a captain when he left the Army. In 1944, Francis married the love of his life, Martha Brandon, and together they moved to Brazil with International Packers Ltd. Francis and Martha moved to Chicago in 1967 when he was made President and CEO of International Packers. In 1970 the family returned to Sao Paulo, Brazil where Francis ran Swift Armour do Brasil and King Ranch do Brasil. Francis loved his quarter horse racing and ranching. He was instrumental in establishing the Quarter Horse Breed as a thriving business in Brazil. Upon retirement in 1991, Francis and Martha returned to the United States, settling first in Florida and later in Houston in 1999. Francis loved bird hunting and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Known to his grandchildren as "Papa," he was an avid fan at their many sporting events. A loyal "Bulldog" fan to the end, he never gave up on Mississippi State football. Francis was a gentleman of uncommon grace and generosity whose kindness will be missed and ever remembered by all who knew and loved him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elouise and John Herbert, his brother John Garrott Herbert, Jr., his son, Lyon Brandon Herbert, and his granddaughter Phoebe Harborough Voorhees. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha Brandon Herbert, his brother Raford Herbert and his wife Patricia, and his children and grandchildren: Lansdale and Teresa Herbert and their children Francis, Julia and Garrott; Melissa and Teddy Voorhees and their children Daisy, Harlow, Anna, and Lucy; James Herbert and his daughter Jessica; Erika Giede; Cornelia Herbert and her daughter Aline; Daniel and Mimi Herbert and theirchildren Thomas, Stephanie, and Olivia; and Bill and Lynn Herbert and their sons Ian and Henry. The family would like to thank Gregoria Bailon for all of her love and support caring for Francis and also the staff at Kindred Hospital who were so helpful during his final months. A memorial service will be held at three o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, October 25, in the chapel of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard.
