Obituary 

Mary Elizabeth Hooker

Mary Yates Hooker, 83, died Sunday, February 14, 1999 at the Methodist Healthcare Middle Mississippi Campus in Lexington. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16 at the First United Methodist Church with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Rev. Robert T. Welch,Jr. officiated.

Mrs. Hooker, a native of Shelby, was the daughter of the late Thomas E. Yates and Julia Hilliard Yates. She received her education at the Shelby public school and attended Delta State University and the University of Mississippi, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She married Edwin Wilburn Hooker in 1935 and the couple made their home in Lexington. Mr. Hooker died in 1989 and Mrs. Hooker continued to live in Lexington the remainder of her life.

Mrs. Hooker was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church of Lexington where for many years she was a Sunday School teacher and choir member. Although she was not well for quite a while, she never gave the appearance of being ill. “Honey” as she was known to her family and closest friends, was an avid bridge player, a very outgoing, glamorous person and an altogether charming lady.

Mrs. Hooker is survived by three sons, Ed Wilburn Hooker and Otho H. “Bootsy” Hooker of Lexington, and Wyche Hooker of Cruger; two brothers, Jack B. Yates of Lexington, and Gene Yates of Jackson; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers were Max Yates, Tommy Yates, Bill Yates, Gene Yates, Ken Ellis, and Harold Hammett.
