Obituary
John Roy “Jack” Hopson
County's Oldest Citizen Passed Away Last Week

John Roy "Jack" Hopson, Holmes County's oldest citizen at the age of 110, died Wednesday, January 29 at his home in Lexington. He was born in Winston County on September 15, 1864.

Funeral services for Mr. Hopson were held Friday, January 31 at 11:00 a.m. in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Rev. L. B. Morris, pastor of the Zion Baptist Church of Anguilla, Miss., was the officiating minister.

Mr. Hopson, a retired farmer, had lived in Lexington for the past 26 years. He was the father of 14 children, one of whom is deceased. During his lifetime he spent most of his leisure time hunting, fishing and trapping. He also loved to work in his garden and yard.

At the age or 110 he was never hard of hearing, nor did he ever have to wear glasses. He was in excellent health until the last 6 or 7 months of his life.

One of his favorite past times was telling stories of things that had happened to him during his life, and talking of the Bible and the Lord. Although he never joined a church he believed in the Lord with all his heart and could quote much of the Bible.

Mr. Hobson loved meeting and talking with people. He never met a stranger and enjoyed telling them of his wonderful life on this earth.

He Is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertia Mae Hopson; eight sons, Bennie Hopson, Will Hopson, and Al Hopson of Lexington, Droke Hopson of Drew, Herbert Hopson of Yazoo City, Buddy Hopson of Zama, Melvin Hopson of Rolling Fork, Johnny Hopson of Swiftown; five daughters, Mrs. J. B. Sims and Mrs. Elnora Martin of Lexington, Mrs. O .C. Ivey and Mrs. A. E. Hocutt of Anguilla, and Mrs. Aileen Poole of Fort worth, Texas; 78 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were his grandsons: David Hopson, Tim Hopson, Kenny Ray Hopson, Stanley Hopson, Jerry Hopson, James Hopson, James Martin and Mills Heard, Jr.
