James Emmitt Cunningham, Sr.
James Emmitt "Bubber" Cunningham. Sr., 67, a retired farmer of Thornton, died of cancer Tuesday, December 10 at Methodist Hospital of Middle Mississippi in Lexington.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 12 at Southern Funeral Home in Lexington with the Rev. David Smith officiating, assisted by the Rev. Richard Wimon. Burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington.
Mr. Cunningham, a Holmes County native, was a member of Thornton Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was past president and the longest active director of the Good Hope Gin. He was also a supporter of the 4-H Club and the Staplcotn Association.
Survivors include: his wife. Erma Louise Buck Cunningham of Thornton; three sons, James E. Cunningham, Jr. and Wilson Cunningham, both of Tchula, and George Cunningham of Lexington; a daughter, Carolyn Mirick of Lexington; a sister Miriam Eatherly of Greenville; and six grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were Billy Link, Bryan Jones, Mike Braswell, Sonny Brock, Bryant Parrish, Byron Sharpe, Jr., Paul Sharpe, and David Murtagh.
Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Holloway, Dr. John Downer, Bernard Jones, Gilliam Gwin, Bill Murtagh, Byron Sharpe, Sr., Donald Parrish, Pepper Beard, Jerry Hoover, James Nelms, Guy Duke, Sonny Peaster, Hugh Meade, Gene Austin, Tommy Peaster, John Edgar Hays, Milton Thornton, Robert Wingate, and Larry Clanton.
Memorials may be made to the Thornton Methodist Church.
