Dr. J.J. Kazar, Long Time Tchula Resident Dies
Funeral services for Dr. Jay Justin Kazar, 79, physician and surgeon were held at 2:30 Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Tchula with the Rev. Wilson Ray and the Rev. Grady Bailey officiating. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington with Southern Funeral Home in charge.
Dr. Kazar died Monday at Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in Lockport, Ill, Dr. Kazar graduated from the University of Illinois until he volunteered his services in World War I. He served in France until the end of the war. He attended Vanderbilt and graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School, serving his residence at General Hospital in Memphis. At the end of his residency he came to Tchula where he remained until his death. He married Retha Claudia Kitchens of Stamps, Ark., in 1928.
Dr. Kazar was active in civic affairs and played a large part in the development of Tchula. He served as vice president of Mid-South Medical Association. He served in the China-Burma-India Theater for 3 1/2 years and was Surgeon General of the CBI Veterans Association from the beginning. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the State Medical Association and served as Holmes County coroner for many years He was a mason, and was awarded the Fiftieth Year Scottish Rites, He was a member of Sons of American Revolution, the American Legion, the Tchula Lions Club and was an active participant of the Tchula United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Methodist Men's Club.
Dr. Kazar will be remembered for his yearly participation in every Armistice Day program where he lead the singing of World War I songs.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Retha Kitchens Kazar; four daughters, Mrs. Steve Short, Mrs. Jim McClure of Sardis, Mrs. Jerry McCleskey, Meridian and Mrs. Morgan Leblanc of Abbville, La., and 14 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Richard Miller, William D. Miller, Douglas D. Runk, Bob Gillespie, James P. Love.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the China-Burma-Indian Veterans Association.
