John Durden Gwin
John Durden Gwin, 85, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, a retired deputy comptroller, died or heart failure Thursday, February 13 at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 18 at First Presbyterian Church with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington. Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangemments.
A Holmes County native, Mr. Gwin was a retired deputy comptroller of currency with the U. S. Treasury Departmment. In 1935, he went to work for the Office of the Comptroller of Currency in New York City. In 1957, he was transferred to Richmond and in 1960 to Atlanta. He moved to the Washington area in 1965 and was deputy comptroller when he retired in 1975.
Mr. Gwin had been a member of the University Club in Washington for 45 years. He was a member of the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, Virginia. He was a graduate of Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina.
Mr. Gwin was a member of the National Presbyterian Church in Washington.
Survivors include: his wife, Frances M. Gwin of Chevy Chase, Maryland; a brother, Walter Keirn Gwin and a sister, Erin G. Lail, both of Jackson.
Pallbearers were Pat Barrett, Jr., Frank Gwin, Jr., Paul Sharpe, Byron Sharpe, Jr., Reggie Gwin, and Ed Wilburn Hooker.
