Obituary

John Marmaduke Kimbrough, Jr.

On Saturday, January 17, 2009, John Marmaduke Kimbrough, Jr. departed to enter the congregation of those redeemed in Jesus Christ, which surrounds the everlasting throne to offer eternal praise to his King, who had graciously sustained and provided for him and his family.

Mr. Kimbrough was born October 27, 1921, and was a lifelong resident of Lexington, MS; he was a member and Ruling Elder of First Presbyterian Church of Lexington; he was the devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather

Kimbrough was a 1943 graduate of Mississippi State University, where he was a member of the weight-lifting team and the Scabbard & Blade. He is fondly remembered by his MSU classmates as "Big John." He was honorably discharged veteran of World War II, having served in the 10th Mountain Infantry Division as a 1st lieutenant. Kimbrough was an active row-crop producer, cattleman, and conservationist.

He was past director of the Holmes County Livestock Association and the MS Cattlemen's Association; past president of Holmes County Farm Bureau; active supporter of the 4-H Club. In 2006 and 2007 he was honored by the MS Cattlemen's Association, the Holmes County Livestock Association, and the Holmes County Farm Bureau for having faithfully served over fifty consecutive years on these boards.

He is survived by daughter, Betsy Kimbrough Padgett and husband, Paul of Lexington, MS; son, John M. Kimbrough III and wife, Debbie of Lexington, MS; son, Robert Earle Kimbrough and wife Susie of Meadville, MS; by his ten grandchildren, Holli Kimbrough (Pascal) Bizarro, Marianna Kimbrough (Andy) Chapman, Olivia Kimbrough (Roane) Logan, Allin Kimbrough, Koby Padgett, Robert (Natalie) Kimbrough, Kasey Padgett (Curtis) Mooneyhan, John Robert Kimbrough, Anna Grace Kimbrough, and John M. (Jennifer) Kimbrough IV; by his six great-grandchildren, Case Kimbrough, Nathan Logan, Miller Hayes, Rachel Hayes, Kate Chapman, and Haley Mooneyhan; cousins, Martha Van Zant and Nancy Van Zant (Tom) Whetstone and son, James Daniel; Mary Kimbrough (Terry) Farley.

Kimbrough was preceded in death on March 31, 2008, by his wife to whom he was devoted for 62 years, Blanche Moore Alexander Kimbrough, and also by two granddaughters, Angela Joy Kimbrough and Emily Parker Kimbrough.
Visitation will be at Southern Funeral Home in Lexington, MS today from 3-5:30 pm. A memorial service will be at First Presbyterian Church in Lexington at 11 am on Monday, January 19, 2009, with internment following at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Lexington, MS.
