Martin Gillespie Catron, 63, owner of Catron's Tank Car stations at Lexington and Goodman, died May 3 by drowning, according to a coroner's jury report. The body of Mr. Catron was found in Little Black creek just above the depot, floating above the approximate seven-foot depth of water, early Tuesday afternoon. He had been in ill health for sometime and had been subject to heart attacks.
Mr. Catron, a retired U S Navy officer of 30 years' service was born in Holmes county and had lived here for the past 17 years. He was a member of Lexington Methodist church. He was a Mason.
He leaves his wife, Mrs Dru Walton Catron of Lexington; his mother, Mrs Mary Etta Gillespie Catron, of Emory; two sisters, Miss Davie Catron of Lexington RFD, and Mrs. Henry Ellison of Clarksdale.
Southern Funeral home was in charge of arrangements, with services conducted by the Rev. A. Y. Brown, of Louisville, assisted by the Rev. C. T. Floyd, at Lexington Methodist church, on Wednesday, at 2:30 p.m. Burial was in Odd Fellows cemetery.
Pallbearers were Marion Ginn, Dick Barrett, M. B. Brown, J. H. Warner, Johnny Robertson, Shep Darnell, Merle Tate of West, and T. J Evans.
Judge W. D. Ford acted as coroner at the inquest.
