Obituary

Hugh Lawson Nichols Jr.

Services for Hugh Lawson Nichols Jr., 89, of Lexington were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Lexington.

Nichols, a planter at Lynchfield Plantation in Tchula, died July 30, 2004. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a liaison pilot with the Spearhead Division and landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He fought in the major European campaigns until the German surrender. After the war, he returned home and resumed his farming operations.

He and his wife, the former Annie Keri Trull, traveled extensively. He traveled to Africa, Australia, South America, Iran and Fijo to hunt big game. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Shikar-Safari International, Safari Club International, Game Coin and Greasy Bayou Hunting Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Tchula.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Keri. In 2000, he married Betty Jane Thomas who died the same year. He is survived by sons H.L. Nichols III of Lexington, T. B. Nichols of Tchula; three grandchildren.

Rev. Shannon Manning officiated with Southern Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Julian Watson, Laird Hamberlin, Steve Flemming, Tom Hudson, Guy Boyll, Darrell Williamson.
