Penelope Shepherd Rites Held Monday
Funeral services for Penelope Grace Shepherd, 19, who died in Jackson, Saturday night at 11:30 p. m. as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident, were held at the Presbyterian Church, Monday afternoon, May 1, at four o’clock, the Rev G. R. Gillespie, President of Belhaven College, officiating. Burial was Odd Fellows cemetery.
Penelope was an outstanding student in both High School and in college. She graduated from Lexington High School in 1948 and while in high school was valedictorian of her class, editor of the school paper her senior year, Good Citizenship girl, vice president of the senior class and an honor student.
Penelope was in her sophomore year at Belhaven and was active in Mu Phi Epsilon, national music sorority, vice president of Chi Delta, honorary literary organization and assistant business manager of “White Columns,” the college annual, for the year 1950 51. Penelope was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Shepherd, and one brother, Banks Shepherd. Pallbearers were Billy Herring, Edwin Ellis, Ed Tye Neilson, Bob McLellan, Sonnie Hamrich, Albert Shepherd, Allen Murtagh, David Jordan, Jack Ellison, John Murrell McRae and Henry Paris
Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

One Killed, 2 Injured In Head-On Collision
Miss Penelope Shepherd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Shepherd was killed instantly in a head-on collision which occurred Saturday night, April 29th shortly before midnight. Her brother, Banks Shepherd, who was the driver of the car and Miss Edythe McDaniel-were seriously injured and were taken to a Jackson Hospital
The accident occurred on North State Street in Jackson when a 1948 Plymouth driven by Carey J. Chamberless, traveling south, passed several cars and headed into young Shepherd’s car, which was headed north.
Miss McDaniel is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. McDaniel and is a member of the music faculty at Belhaven College.

Editor's Daughter Killed In Wreck
Lexington, Miss., May 2 (AP) - Penelope Shepherd, 19-year-old daughter of editor Tom Shepherd of Greenwood Commonwealth, was buried here today--the victim of a traffic accident in Jackson Saturday night.
Miss Shepherd, her brother, Banks Shepherd, and Mrs. Edythe McDaniel, a member of the Belhaven College faculty, were enroute to Lexington when the accident happened.
Miss Shepherd was killed and the other two were injured when their car was in a
head on collision with another.
Miss Shepherd was president of the sophomore class at Belhaven College in
Jackson, and had just been elected editor of the college annual. The party had
just left the annual party honoring college seniors, with Miss Shepherd in
charge of arrangements.
