Malcolm Edwin Phillips

Malcolm Edwin Phillips, 90, died June 8, 2014 at St. Dominic Hospital. Visitation is 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Southern Funeral Home in Lexington, MS. Services will be at 2 pm on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington. Rev. Skipper Maxwell and Rev. Jack Wooten will officiate. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington.

Mr. Phillips was born in Lexington, MS on October 3, 1923 to the late Lute V. Phillips and Freddye Shipp Phillips. His brother, Dr. A.M. Phillips of Moorhead, MS preceded him in death in 1997, also his first cousin, Major William Henry Shurlds on August 12, 1944.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Frances Lawshe Phillips; one son, Malcolm E. Phillips, Jr. (Kathy) of Madison; three daughters, Susan P. Holder (Tommy) of West Point, Patti P. Lee (Kirk) of Savannah, GA and Linda Gail Braswell (Tommy) of Ridgeland; grandsons, Taylor Phillips of Madison, Gregg Holder of West Point and Brandon Williams of Houston, TX; granddaughters, Meredith Lee of Savannah, GA, Madeline Lee of Savannah, GA and Brooke F. Kramer of Houston, TX; great grandsons, Thomas G. Holder, Hunter Holder, Philip Kramer and Taylor Williams; great granddaughters, Tanna Williams and Tenley Williams; first cousins, Maury Shurlds of Maben, Bob Malone of Jackson, Janice Sterling of Lexington, David McMorrough of Belzoni, Billy McMorrough of Madison and Walter Moore of Booneville.

Malcolm attended Millsaps College where he was in Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After his discharge from the Army in 1944, Malcolm began work at First National Bank as a cashier. Malcolm had a keen mind and quickly advanced due to his own merits of intellect, wisdom and insight. He was an easy person to approach for all people - working people, business owners and farmers. His clients loved him an he felt an obligation to help these people raise and educate their families. They sought out and valued his advice.

He has been complimented by many throughout his working career. "Malcolm, I couldn't have raised my family without you." was a common response from widows and families. Others would say, "Malcolm, you are the bank. The man who made First National Bank of Holmes County. We made it because you were there and worked with and had faith in us." Malcolm was admired for his ability to share his knowledge of banking, always being on the side of "right" and quick to give guidance when asked.

Malcolm retired from First National Bank of Holmes County after 42 years of service as President and Trust Officer on January 1, 1986. He was a past president of Rotary Club, Lion's Club, Chamber of Commerce, and member of the MS Board for Community and Junior Colleges, past Chairman of the Board of First United Methodist Church of Lexington.

He was a very avid hunter and fisherman all his life. The mention of "Greenheads or White Perch" made his blue eyes sparkle. Ross Barnett, Grenada Lake, Bee Lake, Chotard plus all the hills and swamps of Holmes County bear his footprints from an early age. His special hunting and fishing partners that preceded him in death were Harold P. Hammett, Henry B. McClellan, Teat Rodgers, Gilbert Bradley, Dr. Charlie Sinclair, Louie Beall Nichols and Theo Moses.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to First United Methodist Church of Lexington, 108 Tchula Street, Lexington, MS 39095; French Camp Academy, 1 Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39754 or Central Holmes Christian School, 1 Robert E. Lee Drive, Lexington, MS 39095.
