In Memoriam
J. M. Powers, the son of J. D. Powers, Sr. and Mrs. Roberta McKinney Powers, was born in King George county, Virginia, in 1870. Mr. and Mrs. Powers moved to Franklin in Holmes county, Mississippi when Jed was two years of age and it was at this stately ancestral home that his fourscore years were spent.
In 1902 he was happily married to Miss Lillian Lyle of Meridian. He lived but a few short months. In 1910 he was married to Miss Badie Moore of Lexington. To them was born a daughter, Juanita, now Mrs. Julian Beall Watson of Vicksburg.
He was a man of jovial disposition, very earnest and positive in his convictions. As a citizen he bore a reputation for sturdy honesty and integrity of purpose being esteemed and respected as one of the most substantial men not only of his community, but of his county and state. He had a warm affable nature which drew him to his friends with strong ties. He was known for his generosity and charity of heart. His home was one of the most hospitable in the county and maintained the finest traditions of the Old South. Indeed, in the life of this splendid citizen were blended the basic qualities of Christian character with the chivalry of the Southern gentleman.
He was educated at Blue Mountain and Mississippi State, then A and M College. At his father’s death he took over his thriving general merchandising, gin and plantation business, all of which he operated most successfully until he was forced to partly retire because of failing health. He had no political ambition for himself, but to the end was keenly interested in the affairs of his county, state and nation, having served as colonel on the staff of Governors E. F. Noel, Earl Brewer and Hugh White.
He was a member of the old Franklin Presbyterian Church to which he contributed most liberally, having made a most generous contribution recently to aid in the restoration of the old building.
Death came to Mr. Powers after a lengthy illness on February 5, 1951, in his home surrounded by his family and loved ones. The funeral, at the home, was conducted by Dr. G. T. Gillespie assisted by Rev. Hayes Clark and Rev. C. T. Floyd. Pallbearers were F. B. Wall, Norman Weathersby, LeRoy Paris. Will Barrett, Will Wilson, Harvey Owen, Robert Lipsey and W. O. Thompson.
