Dr. R.M. Stephenson practiced medicine in Lexington for 26 years and was active in civic, fraternal, church and social circles. He was a Fellow in the American Colleges of Surgeon, a Mason, a Shriner, a member of the Lexington Rotary Club, the Methodist Church and was a member of a number of professional organizations. He spent two years from 1910 to 1912 in China as a member of the Medical Corps of the Chinese Army and was awarded for distinguished services. He received the highest award from the Chinese General and United Province of China and was decorated by the Red Cross for bravery in action. He served as major in the Medical Corps of the United States Army during World War I a native of Kosciusko.

Dr. Stephenson was a graduate of the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons and Emory University. He was an outstanding citizen, highly respected by a host of friends throughout this section.

Serving his fellowman to the best of his ability at all times was a pleasure in the life of Dr. Stephenson, a physician that administered to the needs of untold numbers of people who held him in high esteem. Benevolent, spirited, and optimistic in his views, he always looked on the bright and pleasant side of life. He was a surgeon on the staff of Holmes County Hospital and had prior to his death, initiated a movement to raise funds to secure needed radium for Holmes County patients. He died Nov. 24, 1942.

He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Nabors Stephenson; two daughters, Mrs. Ailene S. Burns of Greensboro, N.C. and Mary Belle Ervin of Crystal Springs; and one son, Robert M. Stephenson Jr. of New York.

He was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a Mason, a Shiner, a member of the Lexington Rotary Club, the Methodist Church, and a member of a number of professional organizations.
