Jane Dickinson Sample

Jane Dickinson Sample, 93, of Ebenezer, MS died December 31, 2013 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko, Mississippi.

Mrs. Sample, who resided in Scarsdale, New York, moved to Ebenezer after her marriage to Samuel E. Sample, Jr. in 1944. She retired after a long career with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She was a world traveler, a master level duplicate bridge player, an excellent artist and cook, and for 50 years served as a member of the Third Order of Franciscans. Mrs. Sample was a woman of deep faith and courage, especially during the civil rights movement. She was fiercely independent, never wavered from her values, and will be deeply missed by all those she loved.

Mrs. Sample was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel E. Sample, Jr., her parents, Dawn Moran and Frederick Wilton Dickinson, her brother, Fred Dickinson, her grandson, Justin Edwards Sample, her sons-in-law, Tim Coyle and Charles Shelander and her granddaughter-in-law, Jennifer Fowler Sample. She is survived by her children, Susan Shelander of The Woodlands, TX, Melinda (Gary) Knecht of Richardson, TX, Priscilla Coyle of Cordova, TN, Pamela (Rex) Jones of Hattiesburg, MS, Kim (Jeannie) Sample of Clinton, TN, Jennifer (Tom) Smith of Spring Island, SC, and Sam (Jamie) Sample of Ebenezer, MS, brothers, Bob Dickinson of Estill Springs, TN and Jack Dickinson of Pascagoula, MS. Mrs. Sample is also survived by eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 200 Boulevard Street, Lexington, MS. The family will greet friends in the church rectory from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on the same day.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to: St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 200 Boulevard Street, Lexington, MS 39095. Mrs. Sample was a faithful servant at St. Thomas for sixty-eight years, where she played the organ every Sunday, and worked tirelessly to assure that this one hundred-year-old church was always available to the Catholic community.
