Obituary

Services for Walter D. Smith held Tuesday

Walter D. Smith, Director of the Migrant Program for Holmes County Schools and a longtime resident of Lexington, died suddenly at his home in Lexington on Saturday, November 20. He and his wife also own and operate the Lexington Advertiser and Durant News.

Mr. Smith was a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Services for Mr. Smith were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 23 from the First Baptist Church in Lexington with Rev. Michael O'Brien officiating. Interment followed in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington with Southern Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Hazel Brannon Smith of Lexington; a brother, S. Alward Smith of Brigantine Beach, New Jersey; one nephew and two nieces.

Active pallbearers were Sidney Henley, Dr. M. L. Killebrew, Herbert Hyman, Billy Ellis, Calvin Moore and Ed Thurmond.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Staff of Holmes County Schools, Herman Flowers, Doug Smith, Dr. John Downer, Will D. Wilson, Virgil King, Sr., Jack Dunn, Tom Cothran, William Dean, Rev. C.L. Clark, Rev. Warren Booker, Willie E. Wiley, Willie B. Davis, Macarthur O'Neal and W.F. Scott.
