Services Held Tuesday For Polie Sullivan

Funeral services for Walter Raleigh (Polie) Sullivan, 70, of Lexington were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 22 from the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington with Rev. Howard Allen officiating. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery with Southern Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sullivan died Saturday evening at the Holmes County Community Hospital. Born in Copiah County, he graduated from Copiah Lincoln Junior College and Louisiana State University. He returned to Copiah Lincoln Junior College as football coach and later coached at East Central Junior College. He had lived in Lexington since 1946 where he served as county agricultural extension agent until his retirement in 1969. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He was also a member of the Lexington Rotary Club and the Louisiana State “L” Club. He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1974 and into the Copiah Lincoln Junior College Sports Hall of Fame in 1978.

Survivors are his wife, Nell Tanner Sullivan; one daughter, Dr. Sue S. Twilley of Tifton. Ga.; one son, Major Walter R. Sullivan, Jr., of Fort Leavenworth, KS.; two sisters, Mrs. Will Edna Gillis of Crystal Springs and Mrs. Edith Bowlin of El Paso, TX; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Meta Moore Educational Fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Lexington, French Camp Academy, or the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Pallbearers were Gene Austin, Bob McLellan, Lewis Garrison, Jack Yates, John Kimbrough and Earnest Lee Ingold.
