Research Notes

William Benson White was born on December 1, 1837 in Rutherford County, Tennessee. He was the son of Stokely O. and Jane (Maxwell) White. The 1850 census records show that William was living in the household of his parents in Rutherford County, Tennessee. He migrated either with or ahead of his father to Attala County, Mississippi. William served as a soldier of the Confederacy, Army of Northern Virginia Co. 113th Miss Inf. Regiment. William married, on February 5, 1879, Elizabeth "Bettie" Barton Noel. William and Bettie White were residing, per the 1880 census records, in Attala County, Mississippi where William was a merchant and tax collector. One son, Leland Noel White, was born to this union on June 3, 1882. The 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records has them residing in Lexington, Holmes County, Mississippi where William, once again, was recorded as a merchant. Bettie Noel White died on July 29, 1921 and William followed just a few months later on October 7, 1921. Both are buried in the Odd Fellow's Cemetery in Lexington, Holmes County, Mississippi.
