Architect. Born in Bath England, he moved to North Carolina in 1800, where he married Mary Rew in 1805. After Mary's death he married Sarah Simons in 1815. He became State Architect in North Carolina, where, among other projects, he completely remodeled the old North Carolina State House. In 1827 he moved to Alabama as State Architect. He built the new capitol building in Tuscaloosa and designed the original campus of the University of Alabama. In 1835 he became State Architect of Mississippi, where he designed the new capitol building (now known as "the old capitol") and the governor's mansion, as well as buildings on the campus of the University of Mississippi.
